The Spooky Truth About Poorly Designed Print Handouts

Your handout shouldn’t make customers work for the message.

But that happens more often than you might think. Tiny type, crowded layouts, weak contrast, and blurry images can turn a useful piece into something people skim once and set aside.

That’s the spooky part.

The good news? Most of these problems are easy to fix before your handout goes to print.

Scare #1: The Text Is Hard to Read

If your customer has to squint, zoom in, or hunt for important details, the piece is already asking too much.

The usual causes are small type, long blocks of copy, or text placed over a busy background.

The fix: Edit before you shrink. Shorten what you can, break information into smaller sections, and give important details enough contrast to stand out.

Your reader should be able to find the headline, offer, and next step quickly.

Scare #2: Everything Wants Attention at Once

This is where many handouts go off track.

A bold headline, multiple offers, several photos, a QR code, contact information, social icons, and extra callouts may all seem useful on their own. Put them together, and the page can become exhausting.

The fix: Decide what should get noticed first.

Then build the rest of the page around that choice. Supporting information should help the reader move forward, not compete for equal attention.

A little white space can make the whole piece easier to use.

Scare #3: The Images Look Weak in Print

A blurry photo or pixelated logo can make an otherwise good handout feel less polished.

This often happens when a small image gets enlarged too far or when a web image is used in a printed piece.

The fix: Start with the best-quality original files you have and review them at approximately the size they’ll appear in print.

If an image looks questionable, ask your printer before production.

Scare #4: Color Makes Reading Harder

Color should help guide the eye, not get in the way.

Low contrast can make text difficult to read, while too many competing colors can pull attention away from the message.

The fix: Use color with a purpose. Keep the strongest contrast where you want the reader to look first, and make sure important text is easy to read against its background.

Give Your Handout a Quick Trick-or-Treat Check

Before you approve the piece, look for this:

Treat

  • Clear headline
  • Readable text
  • Strong contrast
  • Sharp images
  • Obvious next step

Trick

  • Tiny type
  • Crowded sections
  • Blurry graphics
  • Competing colors
  • Too many messages

Flyers and handouts are practical for promotions, events, sales conversations, workshops, and customer information because they put useful details into an easy-to-share format.

Make Your Handout Easy to Say Yes To

Good handout design makes the reader’s job easier.

If the message is clear, the text is comfortable to read, the images look sharp, and the next step is obvious, the piece is doing what it should.
